Sora Shima, Hamilton

www.myspace.com/sorashima

Instrumental rock from Hamilton, think Jakob, Mogwai, Pelican, Isis or Kerretta and you'll have some idea what influences these guys. Thier song 'Tornado vs. Trailerpark' features as the epic finale to the StonerDoom NZ Vol.1 comp.

They have a blistering new EP 'Destroy Electronica' just out and some gigs lined up in the new year. One of NZ's brightest new bands for sure.

They have generously made two older EP's available free for download:

They have some shows lined up in the new year, not least supporting Brant Bjork. Check out their myspace, the tunes are MASSIVE!

Byrna, from Melbourne

Band:Simon, Jared and Tim.

Sounds Like: A superfuzz bigmuff! Three blokes turning up their amps and slogging it out with the intention of creating some heavy sounds.

"Byrna like to make a thunderous fuzzed out groove whilst keeping enough space to give your ears time to reflect and prepare for what lies ahead. They are a 3-piece who've been honing there sound for nearly 4 years and started delivering it to venues across Melbourne in 2005. The "Knock Off The Edges" EP was recorded in 2005, and now in 2008, their second EP "Big Donk" has finally been released."

His car was found at the bottom of Dead Man's Curve... His body was never found."

Dying of the Light

DOTL are relentlessly jarring and monolithically crushing, top guys and a very exciting new prospect!

Dying of the Light is the new musical output of Rangi Powick and Chris Rigby, who played together in CHCH underground band Chapel of Gristle in the early-mid 90s.

Rangi and Chris have both been involved in the New Zealand underground and alternative music scenes in New Zealand for years. Rangi was the Programme Director at Radio One 91FM in Dunedin for several years and Chris is a tour promoter of undergound acts and publisher of a fanzine under the name Subcide Productions. The third collaborator is Nich Cunningham who currently plays guitar in Auckland band Malevolence and has mixed and has worked with many NZ acts as a live and studio engineer and producer. Currently Dying of the Light are demoing tracks (hit the myspace link to check them out) and starting to think about playing live in the not too distant future.

SoulSeller, Dunedin

What is rock? Soulseller is rock. In an age of wayward and misguided delusions of the definition of the genre, there are but few bands to fly the flag of true unrelenting rock purity. Soulseller are the great southern hope for debauchery, supreme riffage and rock n roll.

All you need to know is that they are super bad ass and will fill the gap in the mind of any self respecting New Zealand rock fan, that thinks "rock, in the 21st century is dead." Rock, is alive and kicking in Dunedin.

Second Gear Grind, Christchurch

Second Gear Grind was formed in early 2005 when friends Mike and Steven sought to smash the South Island rock scene with a new brand of fuzz drenched rock which was previously lacking in the area. Second Gear Grind gigged steadily earning support and momentum as one of the country's leading fuzz rock acts, playing alongside The House of Capricorn, Slavetrader, Interconnector and Soulseller among many others throughout many cities in Aotearoa culminating in December 2007's EYES OF THE SOUTH - Stoner Rock Fest at Christchurch's infamous Jetset Lounge. The band are now settling into a groove and vastly developing support within the rising NZ stoner scene. Second Gear Grind offer an uncompromising abundance of severely down-tuned riffs, contagious groove, and an assault of fuzz sending everyone it touches deep into the cosmos. In March 2008 the band played at Devils Kitchen in Auckland which was a huge success, and a packed out gig at the Dux in June leading up to an NZ tour alongside The House Of Capricorn and Soulseller. Keep your eyes peeled for releases in Winter of '08 as the band begins to expand their horizons. Can you dig it?! - 666 -

"FLICKER EP NOW AVAILABLE - This 4 song debut EP from Flight Path displays swirling crashes and harrowing dynamics, tight throbbing bass licks in sync with deafening, constantly driving drums, with two distinctly different guitarists tearing through the speaker fabric, abound in maturity and unison. All the while sounding like nothing before it.

A Flight To Blackout

From Christchurch. Check out the epic live recorded track 'Sirens of Titan', on their myspace. I think you will like. They are working on an album, and hope to release it within the next couple of months.

"A Flight to Blackout has endured natural evolution since inception in 2005. After several lineup changes revolving around a core duo, we are currently sitting pretty with all of the live power, complexity and dynamic a 5-piece band can offer."

At a gig last night I met the guy who's just started this web site, which strives to cover all kinds of NZ rock. He's a like-minded individual who likes stoner/doom etc and is dead keen to help promote bands with news/interviews/reviews/gig info. You could also request a band profile in the directory. You can contact him through WWW.NZROCK.COM or myspace:

The Have

The Have, Auckland
These guys embody much of what stoner rock incorporates from the 70's era of hard bluesy rock, and they do it fucking well!
Their myspace tracks speak for themselves, listen to 'Soul Without Sale' or 'Oh Oh My My' and their cream/thin lizzy vibes to see what I mean. They have a few EP's and one LP out so far, 'Back To The burning Wreck', produced by acclaimed US producer Barrett Jones, whose credits include Nirvana. I will be checking it out very soon!
They have two gigs in May in Auckland and Wellington, which will reportedly be their last for some time. Possibly NZ's best answer to the great aussie band, Peeping Tom.
You can buy their LP HERE

"Old-ish track, new recording up on myspace. Actually sounds semi-decent. Again recorded with the minimalist means possible, in my basement below the earth for extra doom, although this song is somewhat lighter than most of our catalog. Open a beer and crank it up!"
