has anyone thought of getting into an internet-sharing-band-thing?

y'know, where some codger comes up with a riff, another sorts a bassline, others with gat/drums/possum tail, etc...swapping progress until complete.

then meeting up once or twice now and then to play the shit live.

i've often wanted to do it but most/all musos i know tend to prefer the "band" situation.

Could be interesting. I imagine the biggest bitch for this would be getting the drums down.
Could be a sweet thing to try though.

Aragorn from Mynor Star hit me up over facebook about trying to write a song together like that (in turns).

Haven't gone over the logistics yet, I've got no idea where to begin really!

I kind of envisage that one person would supply a multi-track rough demo with a drum track and maybe a dummy guitar track. and from there, whoever else works on it builds up a layer or two and then passes it on? Depending on what folk have in terms of recording facilities.
My setup revolves around Adobe Autition and some crap mics.

I guess that's the fun part - not knowing how it'll sound until you're done.

I like the idea that when me and this other guy do it, what we add to it stays, so if the other guy doesn't like it, then tough! Hee hee. Like when Aragorn did it with a painting and another chick - they a panel each, one by one.... could be a masterpiece, or it could end in tears Laughing

I always thought this would be a fun thing to do, but then thought it could go a bit pear shaped due to the aforementioned issues.

so, how could we progress this (assuming people are keen...or at least semi-keen)?

probably have to agree on how tracks are shared - does one person mix a heap of individual tracks, or does the person laying down their particular track mix it themselves, then provide a stereo pair to the rest?

ahh, logistics! Smile

Mixing down your own parts to your particular sound and sending on the raw file to the next person in line is how I seen it working.
Then, the end result is mixed by whoever wants the job?

Keen to lay down bass tracks if nobody else wants to put their hand up Twisted Evil

dude.

you've got a computer. buy or leech a cheap mic - quality doesn't matter, if anything the different recording qualities between each participant would create an interesting sonic spectrum.

i'm (of course) keen, play bass mainly, a little gat, noise and chaos via synths and effects, and have means of recording and mixing.

on a nice little high at the moment...just got back from our recording "soundcheck", which ended up comprising of a number of beers and all 4 songs being played and recorded several times...may even keep some takes for the final product. fuck my bass sounded righteous!

then i got home and the wifey had left me a pressie to unwind with Very Happy

Yea, a laptop from early 2000's that has 15 gig memory and crashes if you have itunes and the internet open at the same time. A Mac book is on my wishlist at the moment. Haha
